    My Movement Background

"And wash the windows, wash the windows," Art Linkletter's voice rang out on the lp of my childhood, reminding me of the steps to my first tap dance at age three. I picked up dance again at age ten after a hiatus, studying modern jazz until I finished high school. Then, on a fluke, I chose to major in modern dance; teaching, choreography and performance, at Ohio University. What a gift it gave me for life. I danced with several companies and produced two shows, including Colors of My Soul - a one woman show that I produced, choreographed and performed. It would be years later - about thirty - that I would pick up dancing once again, and through it, rediscover the vibrancy of my life.

    Improvisation

The soul of movement, improvisation formed a great deal of my training. In the words of my beloved teacher, Gladys Bailin, I learned to "USE IT," when an unexpected occurrence took place on the dance floor. Bring improvisation to you or your group! We'll explore the freedoms inherent in moving and the joy the body feels when engaged in this creative play. And no, you don't have to be a kangaroo to participate!

    Breath in Movement

Where the heart, soul, body and earth meet. Breath is life, and breathing in movement brings us renewed life force.

"My Creator, the soul you breathed into me is pure," we learn in the morning liturgy.

As we breathe into ourselves, feeling the earth supporting us, we expand body, soul and spirit in connection with the All That Is.

    Ecstatic Dance

Never done this? Now’s a good time! The most spiritual of dance experiences, we first set an intention, or kavannah. We then start slowly and quietly moving to meditative music, connecting in deeply to where our body-heart-breath is right now. As the music builds, so too our movements expand to exuberant expression. Gently we descend the height as the music brings us back into quiet connection with ourselves.
